From discussions about who gets to be "mixed race" to the heavy gendering of mixed identity, the ITYC hosted live roundtable featuring Fanshen Cox of the Mixed Roots Film and Literary Festival and Mixed Chicks Chat, Brown University Visiting Scholars Dr. Ulli Ryder and Dr. Marcia Dawkins opened a small, but important path to the vast dialogue about mixed identity as it's framed in the media and on "Main Street."
The panel also tackled the persistent and problematic framing of President Obama's identity, who gets left out of discussions about mixed race identity and why, and how history can help us talk about the "mixed experience" in a more nuanced, productive fashion.
Special thanks again to the fantastic panel and to our lively chat room which included insightful observations from Steve Riley of Mixed Race Studies.
