Identity, Choosing Sides, and the Public Consumption of Race and Art

ITYC had a deeply thought-provoking exchange with artists Ty Hardaway and Nate Hill on Friday.  We covered a range of topics including Nate's reflections on how he wished white audiences had responded to The White Ambassador, growing up mixed in all-white communities, being a "black" artist, and defying stereotypes about black men.

Ty Hardaway

Nate Hill
Ty has become something of a mentor to Nate especially with regard to how race is addressed in Hill's work. Hearing two artist talk '"shop" and the finer points of their artistic collaboration was truly engrossing. With regard to future works, Nate is in the very early stages of working on a piece that explores homicide and Ty is working on a large format portrait series of stay-at-home suburban moms around Washington, DC and an already controversial piece that is a national campaign to get people not to vote.

You can listen to the archive of the episode here or on the ITYC player right here on the site.
